Chana masala, also known as chole masala is a popular dish in Indian and Pakistani cuisine. The main ingredient is chickpeas. It is fairly dry and spicy with a sour citrus note.  A very popular dish thats quick to make with pre cooked tinned chick peas.


200g boiled chick peas
1 teaspoon of mustard seed
1 medium chopped onion
½ teaspoon cumin
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon garam masala
1 teaspoon turmeric
Chilli and salt to taste
2 tablespoons veg oil, 200ml water
2 tablespoons coriander (chopped)


Heat the oil and add the mustard seed.
When the mustard starts to pop, fry the onions with cumin and bay leaf until onions are translucent.
Add the rest of the spices and cook for 2 min
Add chick peas and the same volume of water
Allow to cook for 5 min
Add tomatoes and salt to taste, Stir and cook for 2 min
Add coriander and stir
